Rohit the Mighty

Meet the Characters: Rohit

“To catch a beast, you must first make peace with the beast within.
– Rohit the Mighty, Chieftain of the Red River Rats

ROHIT the Mighty is the sort of hero even most Magonians suspect was invented by an overzealous babysitter at bedtime. The only Earthborn name anyone remembers, his legend is tangled with the mythical Hunting Kunka; a terrifying beast described as “very large, very deadly, and, by all accounts, not exactly house-trained.”

Yet, behind every bedtime tale, something resembling the truth usually burrows beneath.

Hatched the ignorable middle larvae of some two-thousand siblings to the lowly Red River Rats tribe, infamous for scavenging what others lost, Rohit survived the anthill pecking order with nimble feet, quick wits and the uncanny ability to vanish at chore time.

Small, scrawny and largely invisible as a youngling, Rohit drew little notice or friendship until Rithvik of the Silver Skinks, champion of spears, fists and playground drama, discovered his punches (and his pride) could never quite connect with the “Twigling.”

Thus began the oddest of duos: Rithvik provided muscle and bravado; Rohit offered cunning, stealth, and a knack for surviving friendship. Under Rithvik’s dubious mentorship, Rohit learned trapping, stalking, and the not-so-subtle art of dispatching outsiders.

“I once carried a spear to prove I was strong. I laid it down to prove I understood.
– Rohit the Mighty

Yet, the true origin of Rohit’s legend begins with a coming-of-age hunt tangled with divine intervention, jealousy and rumors of fraud.

While Earthborn tradition called for wild papugas, centipanthers or pangolox, Rithvik set his sights on the mythical Hunting Kunka and broke with custom by inviting Rohit, the lone Red River Rat, to join his hunting party.

As the Skinks prepared, Rohit stopped to bathe in Bhujaga, the holy river, where Shella the Butterfish, goddess of the sea, emerged, stifling laughter at the idea of one so small attempting what even gods considered folly. She gifted him the shimmering Buttercloak Astra, granting Rohit the power to fly through sky and sea.

After an eon of hunting, Rohit returned to Pavitra Teela alone; not with wild game, but astride the flaming Hunting Kunka! Overnight, he was declared Chieftain and became “the Mighty” legend… and, suddenly, every Rat was everyone’s distant cousin.

Of course, legends prefer a tidy ending and gloss over those who didn’t make the parade. When the battered Skinks reappeared years later, empty-handed but for a scrawny pangolox, Rithvik’s hatred for Rohit radiated like a fever. Their friendship, once improbable, now impossible.

Perhaps weary of legend or something deeper, Rohit abandoned his spear without a word and vanished to wander Magonia in search of peace, or at least five minutes without someone dredging up past heroics or asking if the Buttercloak needed to be dry-cleaned.
